100 Days In, President Biden is Set to Create Landmark Change For Texans — From Health Care to Child Care

AUSTIN, Texas — As Democrats everywhere celebrate 100 days of the Biden-Harris administration, President Biden is set to achieve historic change for families in Texas and beyond — from health care to child care.

Announced yesterday, President Biden’s American Families Plan will usher in a new era of progress for families across our country. This groundbreaking plan will provide free preschool for all three and four year olds, lock in tax credits for families worth $3,600 per child, and create a paid leave system so people can take time off to care for loved ones. It will also send students to two years of community college for free and make college more affordable — including by opening up federal college grants to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), and lowering costs for students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and other minority-serving institutions.

The landmark plan also builds on President Biden’s work to make sure everyone can access quality, affordable health care. With the American Rescue Plan, which was passed earlier this year, President Biden cut premiums to make health care more affordable. Now, President Biden is lowering those costs permanently — saving nine million people hundreds of dollars a year, and allowing four million uninsured people to gain coverage. Thanks to President Biden, four out of five people who get health care through the Affordable Care Act can now get plans for $10 a month and 500,000 people have signed up for coverage during President Biden’s special enrollment period.

Texas stands to benefit more than any other state from President Biden’s efforts on health care. Texas has the largest number of people without health insurance of any state. With Democratic state legislators, President Biden is working to expand Medicaid in Texas, which would allow nearly a million Texans to gain health insurance.

As part of his work to protect our right to health care, President Biden has also taken key steps to defend abortion rights and increase abortion access. The Biden-Harris administration lifted restrictions on dispensing abortion pills by mail during the pandemic, and has started the process of undoing Trump-era bans on clinics referring people for abortions. These changes are one more step towards protecting Americans’ human right to health care, including abortion.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Millions of Texans stand to benefit from President Biden’s American Families Plan. Thanks to President Biden, Texans will have free child care, free community college options, paid leave to care for loved ones, more money through child tax credits, and more affordable health care. This is a groundbreaking achievement for Texas, and it’s the perfect indicator of President Biden’s top priority: making life better for American families.

“When Democrats are in power, they create the change we need. President Biden is doing exactly what our leaders are supposed to: putting our families first. The American Families Plan is going to transform life in our state, and I can’t wait to watch the positive change this brings to Texans.”
