A Blatant Attempt by Texas Republicans to Suppress Fair Representation, Texas House Releases Initial Redistricting Map

AUSTIN, Texas — Today, the state’s initial map proposal for the Texas House of Representatives was filed by Texas House Redistricting Committee Chair Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi).

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Texans of color, specifically Latinos, accounted for an overwhelming majority of our state’s population growth in the last decade. What we are seeing in this initial GOP-led redistricting map, does not accurately or fairly represent people living in these communities. With this proposed redistricting map, Texans would be getting more majority-white districts. This is nothing but another example of the Texas GOP’s long history of gerrymandering Black and Latino Texans out of their right to representation.

“Texas Democrats will continue to fight for democracy and fairness in our electoral process and we will ensure all Texans have an opportunity to elect the candidates of their choice. We will not be bullied, manipulated or silenced. Texas Democrats are a large, and powerful force and we must stand united to fight for our freedom to vote and for our right to fair representation.”
