Beto O’Rourke Announces Run for Texas Governor

'Those in Positions of Public Trust Have Stopped ... Paying Attention to and Trusting the People of Texas'

Beto O’Rourke, former congressman and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has launched his campaign to defeat Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in 2022.

“I’m running for governor,” he tweeted. “Together, we can push past the small and divisive politics that we see in Texas today — and get back to the big, bold vision that used to define Texas. A Texas big enough for all of us.”

“I am running for governor to serve ALL of the people of Texas,” Beto said. “I believe that the only way we are going to achieve great things for this state is by looking out for each other and moving forward together.”

Texas has surpassed 17 million registered voters for the first time, partly as a result of O’Rourke’s Powered by People organization, which has focused on registering new voters. The Houston Chronicle recently reported that “at least 1 of every 5 voters in Texas never cast a ballot in the Lone Star State prior to 2014 .”
