Derrick Crowe announces congressional bid in 21st District of Texas

Austin, Texas — Derrick Crowe, an Austin-based progressive organizer with years of Capitol Hill experience, today announced his candidacy for the 21st Congressional District of Texas.

“Our message is simple,” Crowe said. “We will replace a Trump-backing, climate change denier with a progressive who fights for constituents against the corporate interests ruining our future.”

Crowe is a campaigner for progressive causes and a former staffer for U.S. Reps. Charlie Stenholm (D-Texas), Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Adam Smith (D-Wash.). He worked in communications and political outreach for nonprofits including Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Brave New Foundation, and the Austin-based Center for Public Policy Priorities. He also founded, operated, and sold a small business in Austin (Mothership Books and Games). Crowe worked in the anti-war and climate justice movements for years and was an organizer of anti-Trump protests during the 2016 election cycle.

The congressional seat for the 21st district is held by U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), a far-right-wing politician known for using his chairmanship of the House Science Committee to promote conspiracy theories and debunked pseudoscience. Smith was the first congressperson to donate to Donald Trump’s campaign and is one of his most vocal supporters in Washington, D.C.

“Smith has held his seat for 30 years, and in that time he’s benefitted from an outrageously gerrymandered map, corporate PAC money, and the patronage of groups like Exxon and the Koch brothers,” Crowe continued. “The people of this district are wise to the game now. Anti-Trump energy is evident everywhere you look. It’s clearly time for a change.”

Crowe said the campaign will launch a listening tour throughout the district over the next two weeks, ending with a campaign kickoff event on April 28th at 7 p.m. at Threadgill’s on Riverside Drive in Austin. The event is open to media and the public. R.S.V.P. on Facebook:
