House Democrats Lead Committee to Investigate January 6 Attack on the Capitol

AUSTIN, Texas — The  House select committee to investigate the January 6 attack on the Capitol held its first hearing yesterday with heartbreaking testimony from four officers who heroically defended the Capitol complex, the seat of the federal government.

A bipartisan committee heard officers explain how domestic terrorists charged at them, beat them, reached for their weapons, and yelled racist slurs and tortured them while they defended the Capitol compound, the Members of Congress inside, and the Constitution of the United States. They also recounted how the attackers chanted “make America great again” among other pro-Trump slogans as they went on their rampage.

By the end of the day on January 6, one Capitol police officer and four other people were dead in what is now the first large-scale attack on the Capitol since 1814 — more than 200 years ago — when the British attacked.

More than 540 have been arrested for the attack on the Capitol, yet only three have been sentenced thus far.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“It is truly shameful that Republicans, who claim to support our law enforcement, are defending the domestic terrorists who attacked our government and brutally assaulted our Capitol police officers.

“Republicans, including disgraced Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, and even Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, have spent months denying the results of a free and fair election in order to further the Big Lie that Donald Trump is the true and legitimate president of this country. These lies are what inspired these attacks and continue to create mob-like behavior throughout our country. Texas had an outsized presence at the Jan 6th Insurrection and is home to one of the largest Proud Boys chapters. Those responsible for both inciting and participating in these attacks must be held accountable.

“They are traitors to our country and have abandoned their oath to protect the Constitution and our democracy. While Republicans in Texas and across the country are focused on destroying our democracy through insurrections and rollback voting rights that rob us of our right to participate in the cornerstone of our democracy, Democrats are continuing the work to protect our rights, uphold the truth, and to defend our country against all threats, both foreign domestic.”
