ICYMI: Abbott Sent Top Aide to ERCOT Meeting That Spiked Energy Prices During Storm

Abbott Refuses to Release Emails, Texts Regarding His Role in the ERCOT Pricing Debacle During February Winter Storm

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott is hiding information about his role in February’s winter storm and historic power failure that left nearly 200 Texans dead and energy providers across the state with billions of dollars in losses.

Abbott has consistently placed the blame for this massive deadly failure on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) even though he is the head of the regulatory organizational chart. In the aftermath of the deadly event, Abbott publicly asked for the resignation of ERCOT’s CEO while demanding full transparency from the agency. Yet, as the Houston Chronicle reports, Abbott has denied all requests for open records to look into his role in the incident.

The Chronicle reports of a previously undisclosed meeting at ERCOT with Gov. Abbott’s top aide, Abbott’s Public Utilities Commission chairman, and several energy companies, as the agency made the decision to leave energy prices at the max of $9,000 per megawatt-hour for 32 hours after the outages across the state stopped. Texans are demanding answers. Unfortunately, Abbott doesn’t believe in transparency when it involves him.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“We already knew Abbott left Texans to die during the winter storm. Now, we know he was directly involved in ERCOT’s decision not to lower prices and protect Texans from massive electric bills after outages struck. Because Greg Abbott refused to do his job, Texans spent days in the freezing cold without power or water. But instead of acting like a leader, Abbott passed the buck, and shifted the blame to others, as he so often does.

“Greg Abbott does not care about Texans. As the leader of our state, Abbott failed to fulfill his emergency duties, failed to prevent deaths, and failed to protect families already suffering in the throes of the pandemic. We cannot wait and hope that this doesn’t happen again. Texans must demand transparency from Governor Abbott and hold him accountable for his failures by voting him out next year.”
