Texas Democrats Announce Project LIFT Recognized Candidates For November 2021 Elections

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democrats are proud to announce our slate of Project LIFT recognized candidates for the November 2021 elections — proven local leaders who will help advance our Democratic values and mission in communities across Texas.

Project LIFT is the Texas Democratic Party’s growing program to provide recognition and support for down-ballot candidates who identify as Democrats and are uniquely poised to create positive change at the local level in Texas. The program has garnered considerable success recently, with five LIFT candidates winning races in several counties in the May and June 2021 elections. Texas Democrats’ November 2021 slate of LIFT candidates includes the following individuals — all candidates of color who will make history if elected:

  • Brandon Murden, candidate for Mesquite City Council, District 6; if elected, Murden will become the first Black City Council Member for Mesquite.
  • Elizabeth Rodriguez-Ross, candidate for Mesquite City Council, District 3; Rodriguez-Ross is leading efforts to ensure Latino community members are fairly and fully represented by Mesquite’s local leadership.
  • Mark Rockeymoore, candidate for San Marcos City Council, Place 6; as a former San Marcos City Council Member, Rockeymoore has been an outspoken voice supporting the Movement for Black Lives.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Each election, the Texas Democratic Party’s Project LIFT program provides important support for candidates who create change from the bottom up: people running for office on school boards, city councils, and at the municipal level all across Texas. Today, I’m delighted to announce our Project LIFT candidates for the November 2021 elections. These local leaders have shown they will fight tirelessly for kids and families, and push for a better future for our state, one community at a time.

“To change the policies across the state, we must change those who are in policymaking positions. These candidates will lead the change in communities across Texas. We encourage all voters in their communities to vote for them on or before Tuesday, November 2.

“If this year has shown us one thing, it’s the power of folks fighting for change in their communities, from the ground up. While Texas Republicans like Greg Abbott continue to make decisions that don’t make sense for Texas, local leaders continue to fight back — and work to make life better for families in their communities. Texas Democrats will keep investing in our local candidates and powering progress from one community to the next, because that’s where change starts.”
