Texas Democrats Applaud DOJ Lawsuit Against Racist GOP Gerrymandering
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement on the Department of Justice’s decision to sue over Texas’ racist redistricting:
“Texas Democrats applaud the decision of the U.S. Department of Justice to sue over Texas Republicans’ racist new electoral maps — which clearly violate the Voting Rights Act by making it more difficult for Black and Brown Texans to participate in the electoral process. Based on the 2020 Census, Texans of color accounted for 95% of population growth in Texas over the last decade — but the maps Republicans drew in the last legislative session did not create a single new majority-minority district. That’s backwards, racist, and wrong, and I’m incredibly grateful to see our federal Justice Department stepping up to ensure justice for all Texas voters.
“It’s sadly no surprise that Texas Republicans are once again facing a lawsuit over their racist gerrymandering, because the Texas GOP has a long history of trying to illegally shut down the votes and voices of people of color in order to cling to power. In fact, Texas has been found in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 every decade since its passage. Our Texas Democratic lawmakers fought tooth and nail against these maps — just like Texas Democrats, both at the state level and in Congress, have been fighting like hell all year long to try to block Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans’ discriminatory anti-voter laws.
“Maps like these should never have seen the light of day. Discriminatory anti-voter initiatives run counter to our values as a representative democracy, and we need laws to prevent this kind of blatant discrimination — not just clean up the mess. Texas Democrats are once again calling on Congress to step in and pass federal legislation protecting our freedom to vote, because today’s lawsuit is one more reminder that the many lawmakers fighting to defend voting rights — all around the country — need backup. America is only America because of the right to vote. It’s time we step up and defend it.”
