Texas Democrats Call Upon Republican Elected Officials to Denounce Misinformation by Republican Party Chair

AUSTIN, Texas — Republican Party Chair Matt Rinaldi sent a tweet Thursday stating that masking increases the likelihood of children spreading COVID-19, a statement so disturbingly false that it was flagged by Twitter as misinformation.

This baseless claim is untrue and dangerous. Masks are proven to help stop the spread of COVID-19, and while Chairman Rinaldi tweets misinformation, more children are being hospitalized with severe cases of COVID-19 than we have seen before. This dangerous rhetoric, in the middle of a public health crisis, cannot be and should not be accepted — including by Republican elected officials in Texas.

Texas Democratic Party Co-Executive Director Jamarr Brown issued the following statement:

“This shocking and absurd claim from the chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, a party that touts itself as being pro-life, has real health implications for Texans. If the past 18 months have shown us anything, it is that COVID-19 is no laughing matter and should not be taken lightly. Texas Republicans must put primary politics aside and start working with local leaders, community members, and Democrats alike to stop the spread of this dangerous and deadly virus.

“Texas Democrats are calling on Texas Republicans to denounce this absurd claim by Republican Party Chair Matt Rinaldi and to commit to doing everything in their power to stop the spread of COVID-19, including immediately denouncing misinformation that poses a serious health risk. And if Republicans are serious about helping us beat this virus, once and for all, they should denounce Governor Abbott’s absurd executive order and let local leaders do their jobs.
